How do I choose a second alternator?

Does a second alternator have to be car specific or not? I would have to make a custom bracket for it to go in my A/C place (easy) but after that would I need to find an alternator specific for my vehicle or not? I'd like something big for amperage and I'd like an external regulator, but if I use an external regulator would I need to isolate this alternator from my current alternator (which runs 13.8 volts cause my car is stupid //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif ) or could it be run with that alternator?

And what's the best way to search for it? Most of the topics that come up are just for people wondering if there's a dual alternator kit for their car. They don't say anything about how to actually wire or install dual alternators.

Okay, apparently universal alternators can be used for a dual alternator setup. The only thing I don't know is which company to go with, and whether or not a second alternator (charging at 14.5 volts or something) could be used in conjuction with one charging at 13.8 volts or if they have to be isolated?
