How about custom amps?

Yes or no, depending on how deep you're looking at it...
Building an amplifier from a schematic can be done in a typically-equipped electronics workshop, building your own sub from scratch isn't going to happen without very expensive milling tools (or the ability to purchase OEM'ed parts in quantity).
True, But 90% of the folks that do build subs use parts form others, Cannot really do that with amplifiers with out some pretty good know how and loads of small electronic engineering background, Also getting a custom built circuit boards will not be easy aswell. I worked in a circuit board manufactor plant for a few years that stuff is not cheap to make for one off jobs, now builk stuff yes alot of places will not do one off jobs it isnt worth their time.

Personally its a double edged sword both can get spendy but I will have to lean on the custom amp building being more complex and not ment for the average CA user.

I think case mods would be much more practical than gut mods, AND would probably be the main thing 90% of the market would be interested in anyways. It's really only those of us that compete that care about performance first... and maybe looks later if we ever get it dialed in how we want it.

I've built a couple of very low wattage solid state amplifiers, about 25 watts, and my old Kenwood sounded better... a couple of headphone amplifiers, and a couple very low wattage tube amplifiers to drive a single driver 2 channel speaker.

For the time invested I could have bought something that was probably better, other than one of the headphone amps. It was VERY nice... but stolen when my Rodeo was stolen //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Along with a pair of Grado SR-225's, which are my favorite headphones for rock music //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I wouldn't even attempt to build a big wattage amplifier personally.

Every now and again I get the urge to build something crazy...couple months ago there was a guy selling 300W tube monoblocks on DIYAudio, 6 tubes push/pull per channel...bastard wouldn't ship, would have made one hell of a midbass amp pair //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
