Home network

In the process of trying to set up a wireless network for my new place and I am running into a few problems.

Currently, I have a wired cable modem and was looking to add a wireless router on to piggyback anything that isn't wired of my office area.

I plan to add more as I go, but right now the only thing I really NEED the wireless for is a PS3 that's a few rooms away.

The desktop is old as sin, but it's what I have that I've unpacked and set-up.

I bought a NetGear WNR1000 Wireless N150 router, since I don't need to a lot of top of the line features, but I still want some speed.

However, when I try to use the disk and run it, it gives me an error, and will not let me continue past the error to help me install.

I'm fine with not getting a wireless connection on my desktop, but when I connect the wired modem to the computer... I'm fine. If I piggyback the wireless router in the connection and use one of the 4 wired output ports, I can't connect. The damn thing lights up and flashes on, but I get nothing.

Meanwhile, the PS3 registers the router, but won't connect either. It's getting a DNS Error.

The error from the desktop is 'There is no ethernet adapter.'

But according to my network settings, this dinosaur has:

CNET Pro200WL PCI fast ethernet Adapter

Someone care to help a brother out?

did you follow the instructions with the router making sure that you have the patch cable connected from your desktop to the router directly for the initial setup? device manager shows no conflicts with this ethernet adapter?

upon initial setup of most home wifi/wired routers they require you to connect the modem to the router's "internet" port and typically "port 1" to your pc's ethernet jack directly...typically that is...not sure if you did this or not...if so, I would check the device manager to make sure that ethernet doesnt have any conflicts...if there are no conflicts, try uninstalling the card in the device manager and then scanning for hardware changes...if it's XP or Vista you should have zero issues re-installing the device automatically...then try it again...if that doesnt work check the connection properties...

**** the disk, useless shit.

Go to the properties of the ethernet connection, look for "IPv4 Default Gateway" and punch that number in your browser. The login is usually admin for both user and pass. Google to find out exactly.

Walk me through finding the properties...

Until now, I have only used:

Start.

Control panel.

Network connections.

but I can't seem to locate an IPv4 Default Gateway.
