Just spent the night taking my alpine type-x's, all the wiring in the hatch, all the wiring for my 2nd battery, and all my crossovers out of the audi, and installing my l7's in their SEXXXY new box, which involved taking ALL of my wiring and equipment out of the back of the car, and wiring everything completely different to make room, AND wired up a new kinetik 800 battery //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/yumyum.gif.0556df42231b304b9c995aefd13928a8.gif

The L7's are now in 9cf net, firing up, 33hz port firing toward the hatch, wired to 1 ohm with 8 gauge speaker wire all around //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif Had to get the beast of a box into the car with a forklift... turns out my roomates weren't all that excited to help me at 2AM...... so screw 'em.

I was planning on stopping for the night once i got the box wired, and put in the hatch, but DAAAAAAAAAMNNNNN, i couldn't believe how good it looked, i HAD to keep going //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

I had to move everything to accomodate for the up-firing box, because with my last box for the l7's, i had to ditch my amp tray, and mount everything on top of the box to make it fit, but up-firing made a whole new bag of tricks necessary.

So now everything's rewired, everything's bolted down, securely fastened, and ziptied to perfection by ANY anal-retentive car audio geek's standards. When i got my wiring done, i think i just stared at it for 5 minutes.... My wiring usually ends up looking like a birds' nest, but this turned out so beautiful i almost cried //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And to back up the big squares, and the beastly box, my electrical system now consists of a 240A iraggi alternator, an interstate megatron II starting battery, an optima redtop for a secondary voltage-stabilizing battery, and the kinetik 800, wired ~6 inches from my bxi2006d, and about 14 inches from my xxv-02A to regulate the amp flow to the meat and potatos of the whole operation //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Took me from ~9:30 last night till about :30 ago, ~6:00AM. No sleep, no food, no "cheater" sneak-peek sound tests, just me, a pack of camel lights, and a liter of Mt. Dew.

So now i get to go listen to the new setup on my way to WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, i do my installs at work while we're closed, it's my dad's shop, so it's all good, no towmotor theft occured last night //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'll be sure to snap some pics when i get out of work.

Got a chance to cruise around a bit, and check out the new box.

First thing i noticed, before the bass, even, was that unhooking my 1.2 farad capacitor made my component speakers WAY WAY louder.... Maybe it wasn't a self-charging cap afterall, and it was just creating a huge voltage drop, hahahaha. That explains why my subs sounded so loud after i hooked it up, cause my components weren't getting crap for power.

Secondly, the kinetic battery is GREAT. Def. a good buy, bass notes are punchy, and STAY punchy, and my voltage stays right at 14v, even stopped now (i went with the peak output alt, rather than the high idle voltage amp) by stopped i just mean routine traffic light stops/etc. I would imagine voltage will still drop after a few minutes if i was just parked.

And finally, for the kickers.... they're WAY different than the type-x's, that's for sure. It's honestly going to be a TOUGH call on which set to keep. The L7's hit a beat with way more authority than the type-x's, just by virtue of cone area. Even quick beats, like in Aenema, by tool, it's nice and tight, but hits HARD. But honestly, for 15's in such a huge freakin' box, i'm wondering where my LOWS went compared to the type-x......

I miss having peak output on songs like 'money where your mouth is' and 'killing me softly," "what's the difference" and especially POUNDING those lows on "i got five on it" i expected the 15's to excel at those types of songs.

In fact, i'm having a hard time finding WHERE the peak output of this box is, i'll have to get some test tones and play around. I may also be losing output because i didn't raise my ssf, i had it set @ 25hz for the type-x's, so after work i'll try raising it to 28 or 29 and see if that changes anything.

We'll see, i didn't like the type-x's at first, but i tweaked and tweaked and tweaked, and they finally blew me away....

Hopefully with some tweaking, i can get these l7's wanging good tonight.

A forklift for 9 cubes and l7's??? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

yup, nowhere to hold the box, it's 41.25 inches wide, which is the EXACT distance between wheel wells in the back, plus i had my amps mounted to the box already to go. No way in hell i was going to try and put it in there myself at the risk of scratching or breaking my amps, scratching or breaking my bumper, or hurting myself in an empty warehouse at 2AM with a broken cell phone.

You can go lift stuff all you want //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif having super-hero manpower pride's not worth back surgeries or f'ing my equipment up to me...

trying to get these stupid l7's loud has already broken my wallet, if they break my back now, i wont even be able to afford to keep them, that would be just about a kick in the grundle, selling the speakers you broke your back lifting to pay for the back surgery..... I'd probably jump out the window, or onto a 3rd rail, or crawl across the floor bite the cable terminal on my alternator

What could be lurking in this unassuming late model grociery getter?

Well, i'll be darned, it's a cute little boom box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

the layout's form after function, and i didn't have enough spade connectors to cut the extra speaker wire out at the time, but it's as tidy as possible, nothing's hanging loose, sliding, or vibrating, and it all fits behind the seat. Delicious.

After a day of playing around, and tweaking x-overs and stuff, i'm honestly still a little disappointed with the lowend extension of the l7's, that's the whole reason i got 15's rather than 12's, i wanted the lowend the type-x's had, but more output. Not looking like it's going to happen.

We'll see, i'm gonna live with the setup for a while, it's really gonna be a tough call between the two setups. The type-x's are hard to beat.

On the upside, tho, overall output was solved after i took a nap and realized i was just too tired to raise my subwoofer levels (i had them at -10, cause i didn't want something to go god awfully wrong after so much new wiring.) and the 15's hit the beat of the song HARD, and TIGHT, with a volume and a 'punch' far beyond the type-x's, which is what i initially wanted in my system, but once you get used to that low low low bass, it's hard to give that up for added punchiness.

And the last thing i noticed is that some bass notes sounded 'higher' than they were supposed to be, but figured out it's because the box is so close to the hatch, that it's vibrating the crap out of it, and that 'high' note was the bass mixed with the sound of the hatch //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif so now i gotta either figure out a way to get the box closer to the seat (finding somewhere for the kinetik, but i really want it as close to the hifonics as possible) or dynamatting the hell out of the hatch, and i don't know if that would help,or if that would make the entire hatch rattle as one piece more........

So the basic day #1 rundown:

- the l7's LOVE this box, they want to marry it

- lowend extension sounds much better than the 42hz box, but still blows compared to type-x's (keep this in perspective, i'm talking about hitting 30hz in the low 140's, which i don't expect most speakers to do, but thought big ol' squares could do it)

- high end extension isn't that great either. these 15's have a really narrow frequency bandwidth that they excel at, epecially for the sub that's considered the most 'musical' of the L7 lineup, but seem to peak most of the way through their useable bandwidth, with SHARP drops at the highend, and a slower, but still pretty steep drop on the lowend.

- low output this morning was due to lack of common sense, which left my body around the same time my vision collapsed into 2D after working all night this morning

- the port's too close to the hatch, which makes me sad

- love the kinetik, don't try and convince me otherwise! It really is helping a great deal more than my capacitors ever did, and at the VERY LEAST, it's a way of distributing power to my hifonics and my kenwood that prevents voltage drops, rather than creates them....

And my priorities at this juncture

#1 - get some SLEEP

#2 - decide whether to relocate kinetik and move port away from hatch, dynamat the hatch, or sell the kickers (I AM NOT BUYING MORE BOXES)

#3 - be forced to decide between lowend extension, or overall output. I need to sell a pair of subs...

#4 - be satisfied, cause this is turning into way more of a project than i inteded, or could ever have imagined before i initially installed my system in April.......
