Hmmm, to the puter geeks

screw vista, xp does just fine for goin on the internet and playing counterstrike.
people say that every time an upgrade comes out....

vista's gonna grow on your like a fungus, and you know it, if you really cared about a small, fast, low-resource interface you'd be using Gnome or windows 98...

and i'm not suggesting dropping everything and buying vista when it comes out, but if i were considering extensive hardware upgrades of any sort, i'd wait and make sure it's good enough/ fully supported by the new o/s

cause try as you might to say vista's NOT COOL, it's TOO BIG, TOO BUGGY, you're running xp right now, and do yourself a favor and check your uninstall programs droplist and see how many hotfixes and patches are installed by windows update, that's about as big, and buggy as they come.

yep.
did you guys check out that article I posted?? it shows how to make that proc go to 4.1 ghz...
Yeah, real interesting. I might try it if I get that proc. Since I will be installing a cold air intake, should keep the cpu at a nice temp

thats what im saying, let them release vista the final version, and give them a few weeks/months to get some critical updates out, was the same with xp, buggy when it first came out, is alot better now then it was when it was released

it says the d805 supports 64bit, my 920 will run x64 vista, am i not grasping something?

but win 98 cant run any newer games //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

if i had to upgrade to vista to play a new game i really wanted to then maybe but i dont see paying like 200 or whatever its gonna cost when im not going to see any real benefits

Yeah.. you're not going to hit 4.1, because that required the $200 water cooler (so it's actually a $330 4.1ghz chip, not a $130 4.1ghz chip like the title says), but w/that intake, you'll get it prolly around the 3.6-3.8 range.

What exactly do you mean by "cold air intake"

Are you just talking about an extra fan on the side?

Putting a 120mm fan on the front with an adapter to take it down to a 80mm which will be connected to an air duct ( its called a badong ) which will take fresh air right to the cpu

theres a new intel chip coming out soon named Conroe, its dual core and is very efficient clock for clock like an AMD, and preliminary tests have shown that it overclocks very well, not to mention performs better at equal clock speeds than athlon X2's.

I am by no means an Intel fanboy, actually I've done nothing but tell people to buy AMD's til now, but Conroes will be cheap, fast, and easily overclockable.

If you want to have an interesting project, put together a custom watercooling system. Here's my old system.

The only tests I've seen on the Conroe have been directly from Intel, so I'll reserve my judgement for when it's actually released rather than speculating ... Oh, wait, this is caraudio.com ... Real experience doesn't matter ...
this isnt coming from intel...a guy on a forum I frequent got an E6700 up from 2.66 ghz to 3.7ghz.....on air....stable.

13 minutes 57 seconds for superPI 32m...thats just crazy.

edit: I guess hes been playing some more and got 4.1ghz... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=104484

12 minutes 41 seconds...on air

theres a guy who got 5.04ghz with a conroe but his temp is at -128 celcius, soooo yeah that doesn't really matter.

To put things into perspective...about 6 months ago a japanese guy got a P4 up to 7.3ghz and scored a world record 17 seconds in the 1m test in superPI.

This 4.1ghz conroe scored 12.3 seconds in the same test.

heres a test from hothardware showing a comparison between conroe and an athlon FX-60

http://www.hothardware.com/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=832&cid=1

standing AMD superPI record...18 minutes 45 seconds in 32m

Yeah, i thought about a water cooled system, however they are kinda expensive. I will just stick with the badong, and a couple more case fans, and not put some much strain on the cpu.
