I am somewhat of a computer geek. Iam getting paid this week, and Iam gonna do some work on my computer. Can't decide on what to get first tho.

Right now I have a shitty MOBO (AsRock K7S41GX) and running a AMD Athlon XP2400+ socket 462. Kinda slow tho I havea GB of ram, it still hangs on programs.

I am gonna update my whole computer eventually, my case is falling apart, used to look pretty cool, but the bezel fell off, and the sides keep falling off tho I have screws in them //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

My plans for a computer case are to either get a cheap case with a clear side, and fix it up to run the cpu really cool, by adding a "cold air intake" and adding lots of exhaust and intake case fans.

I want to put a pentium 4 or a sempron on a new board, but they run kinda high. So what is a good processor that is relatively cheap. I know cheap and good doesn't go together, but you know what I mean. My paycheck is only gonna be like $250, so Iam looking for a mobo and cpu deal that will leave me with enough to buy some ram, atleast 512.

Iam thinking about buying a CPU and MOBO deal with a celeron, tho I know celeron has a lower cache than a pentium 4 and sux, but I could always upgrade to a pentium.

BTW how good are the sempron 3200+ compared to a pentium 4 on 478?

Isn't the 3200 supposed to mean that it is equal to a 3.2Ghz intel or something?

A friend told me he read somewhere that AMD is supposed to be doing some price cuts, may want to look out for that. Also, p4's ****, stick with the amd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Why a sempron? for the same money you can get an XP and get an extra couple hundred Mhz out of it. and no its not equal to a P4 3.2 thats the hype AMD wantyed you to beleive in actuality it is about equal to a P4 2.2Ghz It may have been equal to a P2 3.2 if they existed but not a P4 or even a P3 for that matter.

and I like the pentium D for windows and the A64 for Linux.

i have a pentium D920, because when i got it everyone said dont waste money on the bigger ones because this one will overclock ot over 4ghz, since i dont really need 4ghz and i dont want the extra heat, it sits ast 3.85ghz daily, i can play games, run 3dmark 06 and all that stuff for a while, only thing holding me back was my graphics card which has died now, but it could handle most games at high setting though(nvidia 6800gs oc'd)

but i second the D805, and maybe an ASUS mobo or gigabyte, never had a problem with either of these

also which kind of ram do you have now, and do you want to keep it? run 2 same size stick and run it in dual channel mode

there are many different things to look at when choosing a mobo, onboard video? pcix16 slots, agp, which type of ram and how many slots, # of PCI slots, built in raid, SATA

just figure out what you want and let us know

I have pc2700 on my mobo as that is the highest it says that it will take. Onboard video isn't a necessity as I have a crappy Nvidia graphics card that will cover the basic video display. I definitely plan on doing some overclocking. Basically I just want a combo that will run photoshop and a few other tools at the same time and a decent mobo that will play some games like GTA:SA and NFSU2. My computer will play those games pretty well right now, but they can get kinda choppy, mainly cuz of my graphics card. I am giving my mobo and ram to my mom since she is running a 1.3 ghz celeron :p and 384 mb of 133 sdram. Really I am just wanting to upgrade to use for a general use computer to run applications faster and play a few games here and there. I would like atleast 3 PCI cards, AGP, and SATA. I would like to keep the mobo, cpu, and atleast 512mb ram under $250 if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions bamaboy, I think I will get the pentium D for $108 and a Gigabyte mobo for $55 and 512mb for like $40 or $50. Be much cheaper, plus it has alot of cache with it's dual core.

yea those pentium D's will overclk good, even if you do have the same cpu, not all of them will overclock the same, you could get a bad batch and not beable to overclock past 3ghz, just depends

so the graphics card you have is agp?

nah, pci //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

My mobo does has AGP support, but the dude that built my computer 2 years ago put a pci in

what programs does your computer hang on now?

and if your games aren't running fast enough, get a better graphics card....... that would be my #1 priority unless your current setup doesn't have a pci-e slot.

I'd go.... nothing.

Dude, if you run a windows based computer, i WOULD NOT upgrade my computer right now. Windows vista's coming out in the fall, and word on the street, is that it's going to utilize some proprietary hardware, and is supposedly going to have true support for 64-bit processors, but who knows which models that are out now.

Bottom line, the new os is mucho-heavy on the graphical interface, and god only knows what sorts of specs all your components are gonna need to be able to run an operating system that's more complicated, visually, than most games that are out right now, ON TOP of all your other programs.

I too have been waiting to upgrade, i really want a pentium dual core, or a amd athlon 64x2 4600+ (drool) but that would ****, if i shelled out the cash now, and then vista ended up not supporting 64 bit on that processor, or my video card wasn't fast enough or big enough, or 'optiized' for it, etc. So i'm waiting till fall.

Yeah, i heard about windows vista. They have a beta release right now. I don't believe I will upgrade to vista tho. I like to keep things basic, I hesitated to upgrade from 2000 pro to xp. They had a list of specs that your computer is required to have to run vista, kinda high standards. I think I will stick with XP pro, I don't like changes.

the d 805 is 64 bit, and will be good enough for a while

deff get a mobo with a Pci express slot, and when you get some money check out a nvidia 6600gt, good cheap cards

and i wouldnt touch vista until they get all the bugs out when they release it, i would give them a few weeks/months to get some updates out

newegg has a 6800xt for 100$
