High Freq. driver problem?

On a pair of sony 3-way 6.5" speakers as my front drivers, the top frequency (crashing cymbals, crunch of a guitar) sounds are coming in and out. They will work at lower volumes sometimes, but randomly crackle and dissappear, and the result is muddy sounding music. Im thinking the top tweeter is blown out.. they are oldish speakers.. but could it be the wiring?

haha.. yeahh... i was figuring it was a problem more on the speaker's end... but to sony's ..uh.. benefit.. they only cost me 22 bucks!
