Help with the 12w6v2

I just ordered a 12w6v2 to replace my Alpine type X 12 that I did not like. I have a ported box - 2.1 cu ft gross tuned to 33.5 hz. Would this box work well for the w6v2? Also, I am running a Phoenix Gold Xenon 600.1. The birthsheet says it puts out 812 watts rms. Is this amp too strong for one 12w6v2 ported in the box above?

I thought you were trading it for a pair... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
The W6v2 will handle the power mechanically (if you set your SSF at ~30 Hz), but it may not handle it thermally... at least not if you try to send all 812 watts to it. The W6v2 should definitely have better SQ than the X, but it isn't going to get quite as loud as the X.

A pair sealed would have been the better choice...

The JL 12w6 is 400 rms per sub.Since you are running only 1 sub, turn down your gain. There is no point in overdriving that w6.Remember,by running the ported box you will need a little less power to the sub.I am running a pair of type'R's in a vented box with my pdx 1000.1.I still have my w6's in a vented box. They are a great pair of subs but the 'R's hit harder and louder[they also can take a considerably larger amount of power].Seeing as that you are really underpowering your type 'X' sub{they need a 1000 rms before they come alive],is that why you don't like your X??That 600.1 is good for a SINGLE type 'R' or your 12w6.You can get an 'R' 12" for about $130 shipped..HAPPY 4th of JULY.......Alpine50.............

We've been through all this already... http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=326591
Here's what the OP had to say...

The output of the Type X was solid considering the power level. Sound quality is where I thought it lacked. It sounded better than the Type R it replaced, but not like it was worth twice as much. In fact, I hooked up a friends ported 8w7 and it blew away the type x in sound quality, and output was only slightly less. I don't think I will have room for two ported 12w6v2, so my options now are:
Two 12w6v2 sealed (800 watts rms)

One 12w6v2 ported (800 watts rms, conservative gain settings)

What do you guys think? If it helps, I am running Morel Elate 6 up front, 2 way active, with 200 watts rms going to mids and 75 going to tweets.
He didn't like the sound of a high Qts driver in a ported box... it had nothing to do with being 'underpowered'. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif And subs don't 'come alive' after they reach a certain power level -- it's already been established that going from 800W to 1000W would have gained him less than 1 dB at full volume... that's not really what I would consider 'coming alive'.

My bad,2004 thru 2007 are 400 rms,10 and 12".Looks like they upped the rms to go with the new little footprint 750/1..pdx style amps.I have the 400 rms w6's. Makes me want to put a pair of the new w6's on my 1000.1.The birthsheet on my pdx is around 1234 rms.One of the guys at the stereo shop went through the shipment of pdx's 1000.1's one sheet was 1345 and he bought that one for himself. Thanks for the update! Happy 4th.!!!!Alpne50

Ya, I'm pretty sure JL just upped the power handling on paper, since most people were running them at the new specs anyways. So if it makes you feel better, your 400W W6's are now 600W W6's.

My trade fell through on the two 12w6v2 for the type x. At this point, I can really only afford one 12w6v2. I was thinking that because the JL is more efficient, that it would be as loud as the type X in the same box. Would 2.1 cu ft and 33.5 hz work well for a single 12w6v2?

Also, before the type X i ran a 05 12 inch type r in that same box for many years. Got pretty loud of the xenon 600.1 but sound quality was pretty poor. My overall goal is improved sound quality from the type r and type x while not losing spl. I hear great things about the w6v2 but if other subs are recommended I would love to hear opinions. At this point I want to spend no more than $315 and run a single 12 in my ported box 2.1 cu ft 33.5 hz let me know what other subs I should be looking into.

Yes, it is going to be a little more efficient, so it may be a good switch. But, that box and tuning aren't the best for an SQ ported setup... something a little smaller and tuned to 28-30 Hz would work better. But it wouldn't hurt anything to at least try it in the box you have...

How about lining the inside box with dynamat extreme/ dynaxorb tiles? Would that help sq or decrease the internal volume at all? Also, would I lose SPL if I went down to say 2 cu ft and 30 hz? Thanks for your help

do a sealed enclosure on that 12 w6v2

Try adding polyfill to your ported enclosure. It will increase the "recognized" volume and lower the tuning to a level that is better suited to a SQ application.

Don't forget to put a screen over the end of the port.
