Help With Test Tones and Tuning

Ok folks, I’m really confused with test tones to setup my amp powering my sub. This is what I have:

-Factory 8.4” UConnect Radio
-AudioControl LC2I LOC
-JL Audio 300 watt 2 ohm Class D mono amp
-JL Audio 10” 300 watt 2 ohm sub (I already have a factory 10” 200 watt 2 ohm sub)

I listen to just about everything. All decades, Pop, Hip Hop, Classical, Sinatra, just to name a few. I usually turn the bass down except for when I listen to Hip Hop and Pop.

I’ve heard people use 0 dB, -5dB, -10dB. What do you recommend and why?

Should I use 40 hz, 50 hz, or what?

Where is a good source for test tones? I’ve heard to use Lossless files (not YouTube and such).

JL uses 50hz should use a 40hz for the subwoofer. The test tone generator via the app connects to your headunit via bluetooth and works perfectly so no need for cd's or usb drives. Quick and easy as well.

Unless you like listening to test tones they are completely worthless for the purpose of setting gains or EQ if your end goal is to listen to music.
I was actually all set up to use a test tone, then realized all my factory speakers and sub are still connected and I didn’t want to blast that, so I never did the test tone. I’ll be doing it by ear yet again. 🤣

Thanks! I think I’m going to simply wing it with the settings (yet again) since I have all my factory speakers installed (including a sub). 😢

Do you intend to drive around playing test tones?

If your intention is to play music, you should be using music you intend to play to dial in your gains and EQ.
