Help with setting gain on a brand new sub

I am getting an alpine type r 1000 W RMS and I am getting an amplifier that is also 1000 W RMS. I am going to get a digital multi meter but I need to know if I should set my gain a little bit under what the multi meter reads or just stick with the exact amount.

Also, the sub is brand new and I want to break it in properly so is there a certain way you guys break in your subs or should I just bang and be okay?

set your gains a little under 1000 rms for about 2 weeks ,then after that reset the gains to your 1000 rms and you should be good. just take it easy n the sub for at least the first 2 weeks or until broke in
