Help with iPhone aux input installation

I have an Alpine CDA-9856 (pre 2008) and i want to connect my iPhone 3G to it. I understand that you can purchase an the full speed connection cable (KCE-422i). the problem with this is the iPod's controls are not functional and must be controlled thru the head unit which im not sure i want to do. There is also an ALPINE KCE-236B cable that plugs into the headphone jack instead of the docking port, but is only functional with 2008+ models.

How can i can connect my iPhone 3G to the alpine CDA-9856 with the iPhone controls still functional? Thanks

you cant its that simple, occasionally you will get an error mwessage on the alpine head unit that will allow you to control it from the ipod, but dont count on it. it does happen to me sometimes when i turn on my car though

the iphone 3g is compatible with the head unit aux cable right?
