Help with finding the correct amp with the speaker specifications given.

Hi Everybody,

I just recently acquired some speakers that I want to hook up but I'm getting confused on the speaker specifications. The speakers are the Optimus 8" 2-way 12-1750 pictured here:

Well, according to the manual its RMS is 125 watts/MAX Power at 375 watts with an input of 4 ohms. Is this telling me each speaker is 125 watts at 4 ohms or both speakers combined is 125 watts at 4 ohms?

After answering these questions, what type of amp am I looking at to buy? I'm looking to get as much low end as possible so from what I read on the internet a mono channel amp would be ideal?

Any help would be much appreciated.

They 125 rms each side. With that said, you should be looking for a 2 channel amp @125 rms each channel @4 ohms. A Pioneer gm5400t would be good. Don't get a mono for that box.

I have one quick question though. I was told that my amp should be at least 50% above the wattage of the speakers. So if my speakers are 125 watts, shouldn't I be looking for an amp around 175 - 200 watts? What are your thoughts?

Don't agree. You should always match the rms as best you can. That Pioneer will be plenty.

Hold up.. Rms is taken for running pink noise full power for 24 hours straight. The way music is recorded you rarely see the rms power from any amp. It's way better to have to much power and keep it clean than not enough. A good 175-200 is perfect if you tune it right.

You can burn up a 1000 watt sub with a 100 watt amp if it's not tuned right.

Because you set it right. Take some time and read about rms power and when you actually see it. It's about 5%, the rest of the time it's half rated or less
