help with belt size

Installed a high output alternator that has a smaller pulley. Trying to drop my belt size a little but cant seem to find one. My stock belts effective length is 66.9 inches so I need like a 66 inch and I can't find a 66 inch 7 rib.

Can I use a 6 rib even though all my pulleys are 7 rib?

Everything seems fine other than at higher rpms my alternator sounds like a turbine. The noise is in sync with the engine rpms and can only hear it after 4k rpms. I was thinking it might be the belt so I was gonna put the next size smaller belt on and see if it helped or not.

That's the alt itself I believe, mine does the same. You would hear a squeaky sound from my experience, like when an old car's AC turns on and it makes the horrendous screech.

You may want to see if you have ground noise too from your speakers, that can sound high pitched as well.

 
Most vehicles have a spring loaded tensioner which puts a spring loaded wheel pushing against the belt. So when you put on a small pulley, it should take up the slack. Every modern vehicle that I've put an alt on does that.

 
Speakers sound fine, the sound is definitely coming from the alternator itself. I cant notice it in neutral reving the car but then again i cant rev past 4k, but when driving I notice it at about 4k and it gets louder as rpms go up. Kind of like a jet taking off down the runway.

My car has this tensioner, I just dont know how to read the marks on it. I can take a picture and maybe you can tell me if its reading ok. The belts probably fine i'm just paranoid and wanna make sure.

Not all newer vehicles are spring loaded. My 04 lancer es has a manual tensioner and it's a pain in the *** to get the set belt right for my singer alternator.

Mine is spring loaded cause I can put a wrench on it and push it back to relieve tension off the belt for removal.

Ive heard of other people having the same issue as I and it turned out that the alternator was just noisy at higher rpms. Im gonna run with it for now and see how it does.

Some if the higher output conventional alts are a little louder

That would be a function of the harness, not the HU, I think. Have you looked into a Maestro or iData interface? i would check with crutchfield...
