Help! Subwoofer cutting in and out!

My system is old but has been going strong since about a week ago. I have a 12 RE XXX (Old school 2003 version that's been reconed) and an ED Nine.1. My sub all of a sudden has an extremely narrow frequency response range, and sometimes will cut out completely. Some songs with very low frequency bass still sound fine and the sub sounds perfectly healthy, while others the sub will cut in and out randomly, or not work all. I've also noticed that when I completely "lose" the sub, if I play with the bass EQ level on my head unit (not move it higher, just move it up and down), it will restore for a while.

The amp light is on and the safety line is off, so no idea what is going on here?
