Most subwoofers need a pretty good sized box to perform at their peak. Your best option for great bass at lower power levels is to use a ported box. Those tend to be bigger than a sealed box but are more efficient. There is another option to get some good bass without the box. Only issue would be that you will lose access to the trunk via the rear seatbacks. That option is the Infinite Baffle. You basically board up the rear seat opening and mount a sub to it. The trunk will act as the box.
What about the small ones that fit under the seat? How do they manage?
If you were not impressed by the Fosgate, then you will be angered by those underseat modules.

You’re right about that. My solution was to use a gigantic sheet of Velcro and stick it to the seat laying down. I’m not sure it would stand up if I rolled the car a few times, but once I tried to remove it, it definitely takes a lot of muscle ALOT, to get pried off so brake locking’ should be ok. No uses the back seat, ain’t no seatbelts or leg room anyway. Having said all that, I’m not reading other than that it’ll be ok. I really don’t wanna replace it because it does sound pretty good.The biggest problem with putting a sub on the back seat is finding a way to secure properly...you definitely don't want it flying up front with you if you have to lock up the brakes
I had the idea of adding a strap across the box for added security. I might look a little harder at that. LOLI've had a box pull 4 screws to tumble into my back seat from the cargo area...I got lazy and knew I should've used more
