Help plz:HD dying on me (gotta copy what's left inside of it)

hi my friend has a Compaq laptop with a 40gigs hd, and by trying to turn his laptop this morning he started hearing some cracks... as the wndows was finally loaded he noticed everything was messed up (wallpaper, files, etc...), he then tried to restart the latop, but it never did... it sits on a dark screen saying there's a missing file

so im here to ask you guys for ideas of what do to, because there are important files inside the hd.. i've got some ideas here

a) a operational system that allows me too directly from the CD and to configure the laptop to access his local area network so he can copy the files inside this hd to another computer in his network.... which OS will allow me to do so?

b) A way to use this hd on a desktop computer.... how do i do so?

c) A way to install this hd as slave in his other laptop, so he can just copy this hd into that... do laptops allow more than a single hd to be installed?
