HELP please / prove girlfriend wrong / STUPID bet

It takes an enourmous amount of energy to change water temperature because of its high specific heat. this is why coastal areas have milder climates than that of inland locations - the water warms the surrounding air in the winter as heat is released, while the body of water cools the air as it absorbs the heat in the summer.

The average temperature of the lake you're talking about isn't going to change but a fraction of a fractionof a fraction of a degree during such a short period of time. Surface temperatures will change somewhat - you can expect cooler temperatures at night on the surface, obviously - as heat is released from the water. But if the air has more energy (i.e. heat) than does the water day or night, average water temperature will just keep rising all summer regardless of the time until equilibrium is reached or temperatures start cooling down (winter).

it wouldnt be midnight, or noon..... The water temperature does not change in 12 hours..... If it does, it would be so minute, a thermometer may not even recognise it.

Look at a pool for example....(i know its a lot smaller than a lake, but you catch my drift)

When you do not have a solar cover on, it really does not change water temp at all in 12 hours.... it takes days/ weeks to record a large temp change..... In 12 hours i think in a very large body of water like lake michigan, reading even a 1 degree change in the lake from 12 pm to midnight would be pretty unlikely.

lake turning:

When the annual seasonal cycle enters late summer and autumn, cold air masses begin dragging polar air southward and the diminishing hours of sunlight allow more radiational heat to escape than is gained from the sun during the day. As a result of both radiational cooling and contact cooling with colder air, lake surface waters start to cool from their summer peaks. Though the epilimnion lake waters cool slowly, their eventual drop in temperature makes them denser than the waters below. When these waters reach about 10oC (50oF), they sink into the thermocline waters below, erasing the temperature stratification that had built during summer.

Here's my question - why are you bothering to date someone that you despise even the thought of a weekend away with her?
The **** can't be that good, fella. It simply can't.
i would have to take her somewhere that i would have no interest in going. She wants me to go to a cosmetology convention across country. I would rather not...... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif :verymad: //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

i think she might be right. after a long day with the sun beaming on it it would get warmer. one of my teachers also told me that the water is always warmer around august september and coldest around january february.

Really! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/idea.gif.5acb6a39a9b92425414c316dda202bad.gif

I think the schedule of the sun setting and rising would have a large impact on the water temperature in your bet, but if you go by a lake such as lake michigan I think everyone else is correct with the water being warmer at midnight but not by much at all. I think that unless you can find a lake where the sun is up from like 1 am to 1pm than you may want to pack your bags for the cosmetology convention. I may be wrong though, but I did just graduate high school
