Well my girlfriend is a bia to put it nicely. We made a bet and if i lose i gotta take her somewhere i would despise...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif (example Great America or weekend away with her) I want nothing to do with these escapades mind you. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif

The bet is for example Lake Michigan, Will the water be warmer at noon or 12 in the evening????. Its a simple bet but after a few drinks i was ready to crack my beer / case over her head. She is Positive that for some dumb reason the water is warmer @ midnight rather then noon. I do understand that the temperature difference is going to be rather tiny but i cant see her reasoning. I know the surface temp will be higher at noon and i would think with no direct sunlight and the cooling evening temperatures, the h2O would cool off.

Please prove her wrong.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif :) //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif :)

I've never really paid attention to water temps on a daily basis. But it might be possible. Just like how even though the hottest months of the year the are usually july and the first half of august, the oceans is it's warmest @ the end of august/ beginning of september since it's a large mass that takes time to warm. But in one day at night with no sunlight, I'm not sure how noticable it would be. But I could also be completely wrong on this.

i know that the water feels warmer, since the relative air temp is cooler at night. That's how lake fog forms too. Lakes seem too big to change daily. I think it's the perception of temp change.

hey how about this idea ... take a themometer and put it in the water around noon then at midnight .. see what the results are:laugh:

Here's what I was talking about. There's as much as a 35 degree temp change in some ares on the east coast, but that takes months. In twelve hrs. I doubt there will be any difference.

i would agree as well. I understand that the temperature difference is going to be tiny but i need to find some sort proof because i HATE losing bets to her
This is all I've found so far,

http://oceanworld.tamu.edu/educators/currents/activities/CURR_energy.htm

According to oceanographer Dr. Ben Giese at Texas A&M, if you're interested in taking a swim in the Pacific Ocean, one of the first things you might do--after checking for sharks--is determine the water's temperature. The surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean can vary from hour to hour, season to season, and decade to decade. Much of the short-term temperature variation comes from the direct influence of the sun. The water is warmer during the day than at night and warmer during the summer than during the winter for the same basic reason: The sun's rays are more intense during the day and in the summertime and less intense during the evening and the wintertime.

i would have to agree, beer makes me take stupid expensive bets and im a sore loser.

Think about it. at midnight the water had all day to warm up from the sun. at noon it is just starting to get warm. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
