Help Playing Video Files On Pioneer AVIC series dvd players

hey guys i have a pioneer avic-z110bt and im having trouble getting the right format to play using an sd card or the usb..now them manual says for usb/sd cars the formats ...

.avi - mpeg-4 , .mp4 - mpeg-4 , .m4v - mpeg-4 , or .wmv - wmv... well ive tried converting some files and even have some avi and mp4 files and i still cant get them to play!...any thoughts?? maybe i dont have the right conversion software??
