Help on tuning my amp

I have an alpine pdx 1.1000 and I'm trying to get it tuned right now. There is a switch on it that's labled Input Gain Selector Switch, and the description in the manual says this, "Set this switch according to the head unit’s output level. Set to the “0.1V-1.0V” position when the output level of the head unit is 0.1V-1.0V. Set to the “1.0V-8.0V” position when the output level of the head unit is 1.0V-8.0V." My question is, how do I know what my head unit output level is? When the selector is on the .1-1.0 setting it is a whole lot quieter, but has a lot cleaner bass. When it is on the 1.0-8.0 setting, it is very loud but the bass isn't as defined.

Its a valor IDA-700w, I didn't buy it so I don't have a manual and I can't find any specs on it online. The only thing I know is it has rca outputs for sub, front and rear speakers.
