Help me with my port logic!

SO, If you have a small box say 1.5cu. ft. , you would require more port area that of a box that was 3 cu. ft to attain the desired tune?? Hence smaller box= longer ports, big box=short ports right? How do I know how many ports I need? Is number of ports related to the amount of woofer excursion? I am geting an orion h2 12" I calculated that if the box was 2.87 cu ft. and I had 2 4" round ports, tuned to 33 hz they would each port need to be 18.75" long.
