but playing a square wave will not break a sub.

the square wave is a square wave, and as long as the power output from the amp (weather clipped or not) is under the thermal\mechanical requirements of the sub (in the box that its using) is not beyond its limits, the sub will play that clipped signal all day.

the reason why clipping breaks subs, is because the clipped signal can increase the power that an amp puts out. clipping can not kill a sub. but the overpowering associated with clipping can.

ok there you go i misunderstood you to a point. but i didnt know about clippin not screwin subs up until its past thermal or mechanical limits. from what i read i understood that clippin at moderate power levels screws things up. learn something new everyday.

It's dumb yes, but as it was adroitly said before, his money, his subs. People can think what they want, as this often increases the satifaction value of the whole mess.

Find him a different option for the same price, tell him why it's better (c'mon, look at thos fncking Volfenhags, they look like upper level Pyramid subs!) using fundemental things such as construction quality and other specs of the sub which he's interested in. I would suggest a 12" L7, but that's me. Everyone jumps all over RE's ****, and I can't blame them, but who can beat the cost effectiveness of the good ol' used L7?
