Help me spend my money!

I have a 2006 GTO with a Pioneer P3200 head unit with a JBL 7001 700 watt mono amp going to 2 OLD Cerwin Vega 12's in a ported box. I installed everything myself and have never been happy with it. Sounds muddy/boomy/not good. I'm just looking for nice loud tight bass, not looking to be heard 3 blocks away. The box just BARELY fits in my trunk and I have the speakers/ports pointed to the rear, does that make a difference? The GTO has the gas tank vertically behind the back seat, in the front of the trunk so maybe that makes a difference, but I'd read on forums that guys had a lot of success with trunk mounted subs.

My thought is that the current subs are the weak spot. They were old when I bought them off craigslist 3 yrs ago. Did Cerwin Vega make good car audio subs ~ 10 years ago?

I was seriously about click "buy" on a preloaded Kicker Comp twin 10" sub box when I realized that it is 1.5" taller than my current twin 12" box and it barely fits as is. Now, I'm looking for some more knowledgeable opinions on what my next step should be.

Anyway, can I get some opinions on whether my system just needs tuning or something, or can I spend ~$300 for two 10s in a box and have way better sound AND get a little bit of my trunk back?

Thanks in advance!

If they are from 10 years ago, good chance that they are engineered to perform well in sealed boxes or very big ported boxes. I would get a dual 12 sealed box first and sell the ported... or trade on craigslist.

Afterwards swap subs.

Or just sell your 12s in a ported as is and buy a new pair of 12s sealed.

These 12s can work in as little as .33 cubic feet sealed per sub and you can go up to 1 cubic feet as well. so you'll get back A LOT of trunk space while sounding better and louder. They are well known performers for great sound quality.

Thanks for the replies.

Is my JBL 7001 amp enough to push those two 12" Daytons? Am I correct that I would wire them together to show a 2 ohm load to my amp? Its rated at 700W at 2 ohms, does that sound like it would perform well?

I'm in Tacoma.

I was thinking ~ $300 for the 2 subs and box. But, I'm fine building the box myself...

Yes it was my plan to sell the current box/subs and replace them with whatever you gents thought would be best.

Is there plans online somewhere for a box for the 2 12" Daytons that were linked? My current box is 34"x17"x13", and it just BARELY fits. I'd like for it to be less wide for sure to free up some trunk space.

BTW, this is what my current subs look like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-Refurbished-Old-School-Cerwin-Vega-Vega-124-12-subwoofer-Rare-Vintage-USA-/141745488771?hash=item2100b08383:g:2aMAAOSw9N1VzcNi

Thanks guys.

man u can do a ported box for 1 12 with round port on side like 24" wide 15h 15d (not exact specs just as example) if that amp really does say over 400rms and u tune port to 32 hz (of course the lower tune would mean port has to be longer so box may have to be wider for it to fit) but it's would sound good and u save $ on the sub too.. if u just do 1 u could get a sundown E 12 $139 everyone seems to love them.. daytons are very good subs though..

Here's my current box, not sure if I could just put 2 newer/better subs and improve the bass/sound???
