help me choose

OK, i've got a Memphis PRD500.1 amp running 2 RE8 subs. It's really too much for those little subs, however I have hit 135.5dbs with them....with a 400 watt amp.

anyways, I am thinking of getting either 2- 250watt subs, or 1-500 watt sub to replace them. I'll have to have a friend of mine make the box, he's good at that...but anyone got some suggestions? I really want to get a bit louder than the 135.5 but still keep good sound.

However, seeing that I dont want to take up the whole trunk(part of the reason I went with 2-8s anyway) i dont want to go bigger than 2-10s or 1-12.

OH and since someone may bring it up...price, for subs only...say around 200-250 total

also, was thinking of maybe keeping the box and putting 2 DD1508's in it, but wouldnt 500 watts be underpowering them?
