I have a Rodeo with a 120amp Alternator, Optima yellow Top up front with 2Ga running back to the Kinetik 2400 it is fused under the hood and by the rear battery. the midi fuse in the back has the 2 poles where the wires connect to,one from the front battery to the fuse, and them from the fuse to the rear battery. the strand of wire that runs from the kinetik to the fuse is getting so hot it has melted the plastic housing, the Fuse is a Stinger 250amp and hasn't blown. now my alternator is shot and im trying to figure out what im doing wrong? do I need thicker wire anywhere? any help would be greatfull. No one makes a high output alternator for my application. PLZ HELP!!

My god your dumb.
It could be getting to hot if you pass too much current to it. So don't say only when there are a number of different things to cause the wire to melt.
i was only just throwing it out there..

due to the fact he is running 2 ga...

i could see what you mean if he was running something smaller then 4ga..

so **** a dick.

yea im not a dumb ****, lol its all wired correctly, and if it was wired backwards it would pop the fuse? I think it has something to due with my Alternator. it got hot about 3-5 times and now my alternator has shit the bed. what else could it be. anyone on here rebuilt HO alts? it takes it about 10 mins of banging hard to get it that hot, if it helps, I have 2 Hifonics BXI 2006ds and 4 15" mmats Dreads also have a Sound stream 6 farad Cap that could be helping or not im not sure. PLZ help! at the mount it shit the bed I was only running 2 subs and 1 amp.

Depending on the length of the run and the specific 2 ga, I would think 250 amps is more than the wire rating.

A few loose strands grounding out or bad connection could also be causing the problem.

the only way you are gonna burn a 2 guage wire that short is going to be if there is a short somewhere. and the short will be where the wire stops melting.

i dont know, but the battery could possibly be labeled backwards or something stupid.

its like this?

gnd--- -[yellowtop in engine]+ --fuse--------------------fuse------- +[kinetik2400 in trunk]----gnd

red is where its burned?

maybe a regulator, or diod may be burnt up in ur alt... get it checked.

my point exactly...

put a multimeter on your batteries, make sure when the red is on what is labeled as the positive terminal and black on negative, that you're showing positive 12v and not -12v. if you're showing -12v, battery is labeled wrong.

correct where the Red is is where its melting its not melting persay it has gotten EXTREMLY hot. yes everything is labled correct. I just bought some new Stinger 0 Ga terminals maybe I did not have a perfect connection. I dont know, I do kniow I cant afford to fork out 190 bucks for a new alternator everytime something happens //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

If the whole wire is 2 gauge and isnt getting hot, than that obviously isnt the problem.

Im guessing it was a bad connection or loose wire and the alternator most likely was just a coincidence since it only occurred on a small piece of wire away from the alternator.

You were eliminating every other possibility without knowing the entire issue. It could be hooked up backwards, it could be some 2guage that has a huge casing and 4gauge inside of it. It could be it got really really really hot? maybe its near the exhaust?

You cant make ignorant generalizations like that, because I'm 90% sure what you said "had to be the problem" isnt.
