Help an Old Man Out

Hello,

First I would like to thank everyone on this forum for the education you have provided this lurker. I have gained quite an education reading your posts on many different topics.

I am 45 years old and my stereo education ended in the late 70's with Jensen triaxles and Pioneer Supertuners. I have spent 20 years around the high end auto business and have never kept a vehicle long enough to make it worth putting a nice system in it. I have 2 young sons ages 8 and 10 and we have begun to enjoy taking trips surfing, snowboarding and riding motorcross together. I purchased a Land Rover Defender 90 for us to use on these trips. The truck is a soft top and the options for install on these are open. They are basically a blank and hollow canvas.

The items I have in my possesion at this point are a mixed batch(I am the poster child for ADD) and I need some direction as to what to keep, what to get rid of , what to buy and an educated gameplan. The poster that gives me the information that works best can choose from the unused items that he or she would like and I will give that item to them and pay the shipping as an attempt to show my appreciation for the help. With this being my first post I do not want to be viewed as a "take what I want and leave" kind of guy. If the helper declines the item then I will place what is left on ebay and donate the winning bid of the highest selling item to this site in the name of the helper as a form of thank you.

Pioneer avic f500bt portable nav unit-

*I was going to purchase a Pioneer deh880prs or 800 headunit to integrate with the nav which has bluetooth and ipod.

I am interested in sound quality primarily and the music that will be played through the system will be a wide spectrum( reggae, blues, rock, jazz and some rap). The front door panels hold 6.5 and the rear speaker pods hold 6.5s and are set in the very rear and are angled at the rear seat. You can correct me if I am wrong but I do not think the 5 inch subs will be enough and was considering dual 1508 dds in a rear box if necessary. I was also going to go with all Zapco amps but have put that on hold pending recommendations here.

The focal comps in front and coaxs in the back should sound really nice.

If it is a ref 200.2 I would probably use that for the front speakers. It won't put out as much power as the pioneer but I've heard Zapco makes extremely clean amps. You could then use the pioneer for the rears. I wouldn't use the RF 4 ch for anything.

And 2 DD 1508s should sound quite good also.

You might wanna compare the Focal and Polk comps side by side to see which ones you like more. Just hook em both up to your zapco amp on a power supply.

If you don't mind installing comps in the rear I would use your two comp sets, and put whichever ones sound better in the front.

I don't know much about that HU, but from glancing at the specs you're probably gonna want something different, I don't even think that one has pre outs.

My only turnoff to the Pioneer 880 and 800 is that GD motorized face. I have always had bad luck with motorized face radios at the worst possible time. It usually happens when I am 6 or more hours away from home and I get to drive back listening to FM radio or nothing at all.....

Calms me down to much and makes life boring. I rather embrace it , have fun and make my wife have to deal with me.

It has been recommended to me from a member here to place this post on DIY as well. I am going to do that and will determine the best help between the advice given on both forums.

As for deciding what speakers to use, why wouldn't you just hook them up to an amp and judge which ones you like best for yourself?
