HELP!!! amp shuts off

okay so this issue came out the other day. I turned up my system and than heard a pop and a plume of white smoke came from my passenger side kick panel. my highs cut out completely but the bass stayed on. later on I pull the kick panel and the white plume was from a blown crossover. now i cannot turn the volume up that much b/c the highs will cut out completely. the amp does go into protect when this happens but not all the time. what could be causing this? what's the fix?
