Headunit power

My Pioneer headunit is rated 22 rms x 4 @ 2 ohms. I am only running my front speakers to the HU (rear speakers are hooked to an external amp) and each speaker is 4 ohms. Is this putting a 2 ohm load on the HU and sending 44 rms to each speaker?

The HU's internal amplifier is not 2ohm stable and will cut out if you try to run that way.

Don't do it.

8ohms is OK though, but your power will be reduced of course.

Typo,

Pioneer once made some HU's with a right rear channel capable of two ohms and claimed it could be used as a subwoofer amp, didn't really work very well though.

You're amp has four channels 22w rms 2 ohms each. They are independent of one another. If you only use two channels, the amp will not automatically take the unused power and direct it towards the two used channels. Nor will the impedance change for each channel. You can only change the power and resistance when you bridge channels or wire more than one speaker to a channel.

You have 4 ohm speakers connected to your two front channels which are rated for 2 ohms. Hence, you're getting less than 22w rms. The load on your HU is still 2 ohms, but that doesn't match up with your speaker impedance and results in less than optimal performance. It will not harm your speakers or HU though.

Well, if he has two four ohm speakers on each front channel and they are wired in parallel, then that would represent a 2 ohm load. And he would get 22w rms from each channel. If wired in series, then a 8 ohm load and power much less than 22w rms.

I had my Kenwood running @ 2ohms in the front and rear. Worked pretty darn good back then.
