I'm banging my head off the desk looking at head units.

I'd like to find something that will control my 4th gen ipod (Not ipod photo) without any extra adapters.

A good set of RCA outputs is a must as well (mainly for subs).

I was eyeing up the Pioneer DEH-P5100UB and the newer JVC decks, but they only work with newer ipods.

Anyone find anything else that works well for this situation?

Alpine works with basically every iPod (I've used pretty much every gen) all you need is the iPod wire which is only like $15 off eGay.

Pioneer radios work just fine with any iPod. Our test iPod at work is a Classic, and it's the generation before they added the color screen. We've never had a Pioneer radio reject an iPod unless something wasn't right.

Look at the DEH-P510UB. Comes with the remote, Hi-Volt, iPod cable included, 2-year warranty.

Interesting. That's actually the Pioneer that I was originally looking at, but shied away because I saw somewhere about the older ipods.

Does it use the regular computer USB data cable? I may just take my ipod and cable to Best Buy or something and see if I can try it.

Just an update.

Stopped at Best Buy today with my Ipod and cable. None of the units with a front USB port recognized the ipod.

Ferendon,

I'm guessing you have the actual "classic" model which is actually a 5th gen that they reintroduced to look like the 4th gen's..

Guess my next head unit selection will be a JVC since I already have the adapter for it.

It would also be easy to add an equalizer to have individual rca inputs for all of the channels. A decent one can be had for less than $40...

There are a couple of options. You can use a marine bt unit. They come in the size of a hockey puck and can mount anywhere. This is the marine unit.

There are bluetooth amplifiers. You can just use your phone or an I Pod as the music source and not touch the radio.
