Hate the sound of my Atlas

Today I hooked my 12" AA Atlas up to my Rythmik Audio plate amp. The amp is rated at 150 watts RMS @4ohms. The sub is in a 1.35 sealed enclosure with a double baffle and a couple braces inside.

It does not sound good at all. What is the problem? It sounds so boomy, and doesnt get low at all. Playing with the tones, you can only begin to hear it at 25-30hz. The crossover on the plate amp is turned all the way down to 40hz but the sub still plays much much higher than that. Also, on Ascendant's website, looks like Ill need a good 4 cubes sealed to get anything close to what I want. Will it make that huge of a difference?

I then hooked the amp up back to my sub which I originally bought it for (RE8) and it didnt even sound close to the Atlas, quite opposite actually.

What should I do? New HT sub?

if its brand new you just need to

1. get more power running to it and break it in

2.get a proper enclosure

Brand new high excursion subs can sound boomy in small sealed enclosures when new, especially with only 150 watts RMS to power it

Switching to a much larger sealed enclosure or a ported enclosure will make a huge difference in the sound.

I preferred my Atlas 15" ported in HT. I'd email, or call Chad, and ask him for box plans..

But... Mine was 6.5 cubes, tuned ~19-20 Hz

1.35 cubes sealed is a tiny box for a driver such as the Atlas. You really have to step it up in size and possibly port it, especially for the power level you have.

when i hooked my atlas 15s up in my car with 3cubes sealed, they sucked. Ported them, and made a world of difference. Have even been debating going back to an atlas instead of my avalanche.

get the RA amp. you won't notice a difference if you have 500 watts instead of having 350 watts. plus the RA one is cheaper.
