We use them at work, but on DVDs in some players they won't read. We also have this machine that can print right on the DVD, but we never use it. So personally, the permanent marker has never let me down.

paper labels are bad news, they can leave paper lint in the machine, run out of balance burning out the players motor and get stuck in the player. If you are just going to label a few sharpies are safe any alcohol based marker is good. I have a few machines to label discs inkjet and thermal is what I have. I have a small disc printing business run out f my house for DJs and bands. Just say no to paper labels.
