Great 3 way component sets with 3 or 3.5" midrange, high power handling

I have 250 watts x 2 to send to my front stage and I'm looking at 3 way comp sets with a smaller midrange since the factory dash location has a 3.5 and no room around it to fit a 4. I'm looking at anything in the $300-1k range from the ppi 3 ways to the hertz hsk 163, cdt hd632, and focal k2 powers.

I can get you the PPI or the CDT systems. The PPI PC3.65C has gotten good reviews and it's surprisingly nice sounding for the money. I'm very familiar with the sound and performance of CDT speakers, and they're good for realistic, clear sound that can get loud.

Will the ppi set handle the power I have though? I've also read the mid bass is lacking on them some but probably depends on how they're installed. How would you compare them with the cdt hd632? I feel like they would handle the power a lot better with more midbass. Does diamond audio make components?

Nismos- I would love to get the dynaudio 362s especially since I have room for an 8 in the doors but not really trying to spend 1k and the cheapest I have seen them is 1279.

I will also check out phd some more. Thanks

If running passive, I wouldn't spend too much just to be at the mercy of a possible mismatch from passive crossover design and the car interior. I'd probably look into JL Audio C5 3-ways. The C5 2-ways normally get very good reviews, and this guy just tested the small C5 midrange from the 3-way set: DIYMA Car Audio Forum

Which also looks good, specially if placed 30 degrees off axis.

Midbass output obviously varies from set to set, but you always should seal and deaden the doors when installing new speakers for the first time. Most people don't do enough to treat the doors and midbass suffers. I have not used the PC3.65C components, but I've used CDT speakers for a long time. The HD-6 woofers on the HD-632 set can put out a good amount of midbass. I would not recommend running less than an 80 Hz 24 dB/octave high pass crossover when using 250W per side. The high pass crossover must be set conservatively or you risk damaging the speakers. I would say the same for a lot of 6.5" mids that aren't basically a small subwoofer. You could try substituting HD-M6 in that set if you want to run a lower crossover point. This is something I could arrange with CDT for you.

Diamond Audio makes components, but they have no 3-way sets and no dedicated mid-range drivers at all. They seem to have designed their current speakers strictly for lower-moderate output sound quality and not the SQL market. The old Hex Pro components probably could take 250W per side as the mids have a lot of engineering to remove heat from the voice coil.

The JLs come with a 4" mid which won't fit.

The soundstreams are same as the ppi with a worse tweeter.

I agree on the crossover point trumpet, I was thinking of 100 hz 24 db especially if I go sealed on subs. Pm me some quotes on the ppis and the cdts with and without the upgraded mid bass. Thanks

yea, i think a CDT 3-way comp set is second only to the Hertz HSK set in the less expensive bracket.

Dynaudio or Morel are great if you can find a deal on a set.

course, with $1,000 you could afford to buy another amp and run active with three separate drivers.

I was leaning towards the hertz but trumpet hooked me up on the cdts so I'll give a review when I get everything done next month.
