Gratuity fees at restaurants

Im black about 80% of the time no matter where I go I get crappy service unless its a minority waiter, so I dont tip the white folks..They signed up for it, if they like food that much and wanna make more money go to McDonalda or something

Tips=Fail

Agreed, fast food doesnt get tips. I have to disagree on the mandatory tipping. Anybody who doesnt think that a large (6-8 people plus) table doesnt deserve a mandatory tip, needs to work as a waiter for a week, and get that big table and then come back here and say it's not deserved.
I always tip whenever I go out but at the same time I hate the idea of mandatory tips. But for the big table, I kinda get why its needed. I mean the server has to spend extra time on that one table and most likely wont get to any others meaning less tip opportunity. And then if that table turns out to be a bunch of cheap bas tards, that server aint making sh!t.

I'd honestly rather be able to get my own refills on drinks and shit...
And wait in line at the window to tell them your order, and then have to wait for it to get done, all while completely missing out on the reason you go out to eat in the first place- so you can have a sit down meal and good convo with someone? Shoudl just stay home then

If you wanna put it that way, with your spin on it, then yeah, I guess. I just drink a lot. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Tip jars at Starbucks, Cold Stone, and local sandwich shops piss me off though.
I tip at cold stone because then they have to sing to you! lol

stop your cyingmaybe some people should get a real job, no one is making them work there
A real job? What do you consider a "real job". A job is a job. If there were no servers who would serve you when you go out to eat? I don't know if you know anyone thats a server but if they work at a nice place and are good at what they do, servers can make a nice amount of money.

Last time my family went out to dinner, as a 10-15 person group for my stepbrother's grandma's birthday, we got served one refill and had to wait an hour and a half for the bill. I wonder if we had to pay the mandatory gratuity that day.
Yes, you probably had to pay mandatory gratuity. in a case of bad service you politely make a complaint to the manager. then usually you can get a percentage off, some cases a meal comped.

I've never been to a fast food place that expects you to tip. If there is a tip jar or box there I don't think they "expect" you to tip but you can if you want. At restraunts you tip because you're going out to eat. If you don't want to tip then you should have stayed home and cooked something yourself or order carry out. That's why I never get pizza delivered because I don't want to tip the driver when I can just go pick it up myself. Do the same thing for IHOP as well. But when I go out to eat I tip. And to people who think being a waiter isn't a real job you need to think about this, if a waiter gets paid $3.00 per hour and then if they serve on average at least 5 people per hour and get at least a $2 tip per person they're getting paid at least $13 per hour which is well above minimum wage. And if they work weekends they can make a ton of money. I'm not saying that I would aim as a waiter for a career or anything but for like teens and college stutdents being a waiter is a very good job.

Seems that most have forgotten what TIP stands for. Let me educate you: To Insure Promptness

The tip was introduced to actually be paid BEFORE you were served, "to insure promptness". Today it has been bastardized into some freakish expectation on the part of those who wait on you to pay at least 15-20% in addition to what you already paid for, which is typically shit. It's even more ridiculous when you consider some restaurants, like the one the OP mentioned, actually tack a "tip/gratuity" onto the bill automatically.

Sorry, but in todays day and age, customer service is shit. You want a fucking tip from me!? The you had better fucking EARN it!

In theory, it's a good idea. But in practice, it just allows the waiter to not do his/her job and still get a tip.

Personally, I don't care. I usually tip way above 20%. So if they want to make me tip 15%, then that's all they will get (and I usually tell them that).

Some of you guys seem to be confused. By law, you cannot make less than minimum wage, hence the name. In the case of waitresses or waiters, at the end of the pay period if your tips do not cover your hours at minimum wage rates, the restaurant pays the difference. So these poor poor waitresses that make $3.xx an hour, actually make at least minimum wage, with the potential of making (considerably) more.

My old roommate at college was a waiter at Chili's...he made some nice buck. I remember him working just a couple of 8hr shifts on the weekend and coming home with $200+ in just tips. It's all in your attitude and attentiveness to the table IMO. If you seem professional and serious about what you're doing, like you actually care, and ask me for another beer before I'm done with my first one, then you're getting a good tip from me. I can't stand these waiters who act like they couldn't care less about their job, make me wait more than a couple minutes for a refill after my glass is bone dry, and then expect to get a good tip...ain't happening.
