im thinking of snagging one up by x-mas. need one that is update-able and has text to speech. something thats priced low but that isnt a piece of shit. preferably

garmin, not sure of model numbers but even the basic on is good

they are accurate and i have never had a problem picking up signal, even in rain or snow

the higher up you go the more features you get

basic probably wont give you text to speech

Go to Best Buy and ask for the Garmin 260w it's 189.99 they might still have them. It has a 4.3 inch screen and test-to-speech.

consumer reports just did a thing on these, and stated while the extra features are nice, they are just a novelty that wear off eventually. After that, they recommended the Garmin Nuvi 200W in the end. Their bottom line GPS with a wide screen. I have it, and its great.

text to speech and being able to update maps are all i really need. along with being reliable of course.

For the price range you are looking for you are not going to get text-to-speach. The cheapest Garmin unit is the NUVI205 which is $199 and it does not have text-to-speach.

why do you need text to speech?? Hell, I dont even know what it does!! All of the units have the ability to load new maps I believe.

text to speech will tell you

"turn left on forth street"

non text to speech

"turn left" of "left turn ahead

it helps if you are in a city and you dont know the roads.

that way you can keep your eyes on the road

Um...no? The cheapest garmin is actually under 100.... Anyway the Garmin nuvi 350 can be had for around 125-130 if you shop around. It has text to speech. Garmin maps I find to be the most reliable and the 350 is a really great unit.
