Got my freshly reconed Avalanche 15", doesn't sound right.

I just got my Avalanche 15" back from AA after waiting a long *** time for it to get reconed. I put it in a 2.5 ft^3 sealed enclosure powered with a Hifonics BX1500D (1300watt RMS @ 1 ohm), and I'm not really impressed with the sound of it.

I mean, don't get me wrong, it gets sickeningly low like everyone says, but it doesn't sound clean at all to me. I thought this thing was supposed to sound tight and smooth?

It sounds really loose and boomy and has what sounds like a 12dB hump in the 35-45Hz region. What is wrong here? Do I need to break it in or is this just how it sounds?

I never got it hear how it sounded before.

I bought it from some guy named Toxic Tuan, he shipped me the motor (magnet) and the basket. There was no cone or voice coils or any of that stuff (which is why I had to get it reconed).

Is it possible that the motor has permanent damage?

That box may be too big....which is why your getting that booming sound. Before you jumb to conclusions add a piece 2x4 or anything that will take up room. Try to get the box closer to 2 cubes or less...

well, team toxic bass probably abused the HELL out of the sub, which is why it needed a recone... but i highly HIGHLY doubt that he'd put his or his store's reputation on the line by selling you a bad motor, especially considering you're in socal as well.

abusing a sub by gagging it with power will not affect a fresh recone. unless he took a hammer to the motor itself
what other subs have you had???
Well I had an IDMAX 12" before and I'm looking for that type of sound but with more low end extension. That IDMAX had a very tight sound to it.

You're putting 1300 rms watts to that sucker?!I guess thier ratings were very conservative?

Have you tried tossing in some polyfill?

Quick Q, I have the 18" how much power could I put to it, I was going to put like 1K, it has dual 2 ohm voice coils...think that's enough?
Won't polyfill simulate having a bigger box rather than a smaller box?

I had Phoenix Gold T1200.1 benched at 1567wrms hooked up to my avalanche with the gain low and it was too ****ing loud. Only got a Phoenix Gold X600.1 to it now. It still gets loud as hell. I think I may have drained the battery trying something out though.

I was studying in my car a little before class for 10-15 minutes with the radio on but with the car not running. I turned off the sub from the headunit, but the amp was still on. I really wasn't sure if the amp would still be draining power.

Based on the drop in loudness I've experienced for the past few days, I'm guessing that even if you turn the sub off on the HU with the car not running, the amp will still drain the battery--because the amp is still on?

Well first of all it's a 15" comparing it to ur 12" IDMax isn't going to work, and the IDMax was made for that tight low end excursion. I think the A15" was more toward SPL.
Yeah you just always hear these people talking about how the AVA15 sounds so good and I have to disagree. It sounds way too loose...man I hope its just not because my sub is messed up.

Do you think the TC-3000 15" will have a tight sound to it? Or should I be looking at 12"s instead.
