Got into accident, will my insurance write me a check? insurance fraud?

If the insurance company wants to write the check to a body shop just tell them you want to fix it yourself. They can not tell you where or who has to fix your car. Also make sure to ask for loss of use. The insurance company has to cover the cost of a rental car for the time in which your car is (or would be) in a body shop and unusable by you. They'll typically want to just pay the rental place but you don't have to rent a car. Three times I've been in not fault accidents and just drove my other car while the damaged one was being fixed. They still had to pay me loss of use. Also every time they cut me a check directly to get my car fixed wherever and by whomever I wanted. I did still have to get it appraised by their "Preferred Body Shop".

UPDATE: Ok so i have to wait till 6/24 for them to total car, which is what he said they would most likely do, But i have another question:

the rear windshield was busted out since then, should i get it fixed before they come out to get more money ( i can do it cheaper) or will it not matter?

and

Is there anyway i can figure out how much they will pay me for a 98 grand pix SE 3800 motor 4dr with 160,000 miles?? or any adjusters on here have a clue?
