good or bad idea?

what if i built this box http://img77.imageshack.us/my.php?image=42cubes34hz70sqin5jr.png and placed the subs on top so they were firing upwards. would this mess with the tuning or anything like that. i would also have to take off an inch from the height because my cars hatch is only 15'' high.

you can put the subs firing up, but if you make the volume smaller the tuning will go up

.... most people design boxes for there subs... Usually working with your maximum trunk dimensions, then going from there. My Trunk was 36x15x13 in my civic. So I'm using 3/4" MDF, I take it of my MAX. dimension. I'll Double the length for the MDF, 36 - (3/4 + 3/4), so 36 - 1 1/2" = 34 1/2", by 15 - 1 1/2" = 13 1/2", by 13 - 1 1/2" = 11 1/2".... and that's te MAX it can be, then make it to fit inside your dimensions. IE: nothing greater than any max side.

You could damage you sub(s) if you mess up when building your box.

it's ok to have the subs on the top. if you need to lower the box 1" then do it. to do so, extend out the back of the box 2.5". this will keep the volume the same. you shouldn't have any problems. whatever volume you take away, you need to replace somewhere.
