Good components without a subwoofer?

Hey guys.

After some searching, I couldn't find a straight answer to my situation.

I just finished most of my install in my beater pick up. After finally getting it going, I'm happy with the results vs. the costs (super budget). Now it has me thinking about my convertible (2000 Toyota MR2). I currently have Pioneer 6.5 components (TS-something, I can't remember the exact model), running off an aftermarket HU, but I picked up a spare Kicker KX amp when shopping for my truck, which I plan to install in the MRS when it comes out of winter storage. Now, woofersetc. has cl-61a comps for $130, so I've pondered buying them. But space is a premium in my car (not to mention that I love it for its driving ability, rather than its cruising ability). If I install a sub at all, it will need to fit in a custom box, which only holds an 8" sub. But since the box is custom, the price for the whole package makes me hesitate.

So, my question: does upgrading my components make sense if I don't complement them with a sub (or only an 8" sub)? My budget definitely has a limit, but it's somewhat flexible. The biggest budget barrier is the fact that performance, in my mind, merits far more budget than audio.

Thanks for any input folks.

No, a lot of people upgrade their components without adding a subwoofer. In fact, if you take the time to properly install a nice set of comps, you might find yourself satisfied without a subwoofer at all.

To install your comps correctly, first be sure that the amp is giving them ample power. Deaden your doors and SEAL THEM, meaning close off all the big holes and gaps in the door frame as much as possible. This way, the door seems more like a sealed enclosure for the woofers, and your mid-bass response will be significantly improved (just be sure not to seal off the water drains). After doing all this, listen to your system and see how you like it. You obviously won't be able to reproduce the lower frequencies that a sub is meant to reproduce, but you might be satisfied with what you already have. I'd go this route first if budget was a big concern.

It's possible to upgrade your components in the mr2 w/o an amp but you will need to get some VERY efficient speakers such as the Focal 165 A1's @ 91db, or something similar in efficiency ratings. I have the focals in my mazda 3 with the oem hu, no amp yet, (still debating on installing one & warmer weather as well), and I am pleased with the results. You will not get ear shattering volume, but you will get a much improved sound, I also used raammat btx on the front doors as well (search for sound deadening the doors) which helps alot. The HU in my 3 is rated anywhere from 10-20 rms, lets say 15 rms or less, and the Focals sound very good to me, a vast improvement over the stock speakers IMO. I have the volume at around 6-8 majority of the time, max is 34 I think, up to 10 or 12 if I'm in the mood for something loud (to me anyway). The Phoenx Gold comps that was the forum boner a while back are good based on comments, efficient, and
