going active

You can buy a separate piece of hardware that is itself a powered, active crossover.

There are also Head units that have crossovers built in and many amps have onboard crossovers. All of these are viable choices for going active, each with different advantages and shortcomings.

seen people talking about going active on here ...I know passive crossovers are not powered and active crossovers are...and i've seen active sub crossovers (obviously, since I have one) but i've never seen any active "component" crossovers...anyone??
All Crossovers are powered. Active is powered from the HU and before the amp.

Passive is powered from the signal to the speaker.

A Active component set is Powered from the HU "Active Crossovers" You just need more Amps to Go Active. You also need to know how to use it IE Crossover points, Speaker response, etc. Get it wrong and you could smoke them.

I've gone the route of the SX700.4 for my active needs... sure you have to goto your trunk to play around, but it doesn't happen often once you get everything sounding the way you like it.

I thought the SX's came with a controller, or is that seperate?

hmm...my 6 channel amp has variable lp/hp crossovers and so does my deck....I don't use either cause I think they both sound like shit...although I think it might have something to do with the fact that my speakers already have passive crossovers and that means they are really being filtered twice...so your saying if I used either of these then my set up would be considered active? does anyone sell speakers with active crossovers they were meant for those specific speakers...you know like how they do with passives?

to build an active crossover to work post-amplifier amounts to building two amplifiers into the box, effectively relegating the amp to the duty of a line driver.
