glassing my door pannel

Im not too sure if this would actually be considered glassing my door panel but here is what im looking to do as well as some pics.

I have a 99 f150 that takes 6x8's all around and the "door pannel grills" for the speakers are big enough for a 6.5" midbass speaker but slotted (pic below).

Should there be any sort of way to glass the grill to where it is solid, while making it look nice and mount a 6.5" midbass speaker such as in the picture below the red circle would be the speaker.

Or could I maybe cut/route a piece of MDF to the shape of the grill with mounting hole for the speaker. Mount the MDF behind the grill, cut the size hole needed for the midbass speaker in the grill and mount it that way?

Seems to me makin it solid would muffle the sound. Why not glass that panel but when you do cut out the grill part? Make it a nice open hole. Maybe not quite as large as it is now but you get my point of view hopefully..

Tape off the front of the panel and fill in the slots with that 50/40 liquid plastic. You can then either just cut a hole to mount it to or build out from there. Then texture dye it to match.

Negative, i get what youre saying and thought about it but my problem would be matching the glass texture and color wise. Im not going against what youre saying (im asking bc i have no idea) but what difference would there be between putting a piece of mdf behind the pannel and using it to mount the speaker to comapred to a MDF ring that would be used in a kick pannel. I should have plenty room depth wise as all there is behind the grill is the 6x8.

So you basically want to mount a 6 1/2 where your 6 x 8's are currently ? How much room do you have between the grill and the door ? If you have enough room, I would just make an mdf spacer/ring to mount your 6 1/2's in the holes for the 6 x8's behind the grill and save yourself alot of time //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Close ramos. That is basicly what I want to do BUT I want to have the speaker mounted on the outside of the factory grill so the cone/new grill is exposed.

I wouldn't worry about filling in the grill then. Your going to need to cut out most of the grill for the magnet and basket of the 6 1/2's anyway. I would use some liquid plastic, 40/40 whatever you want to call it to attach your new speaker baffle/ring over the existig grill area. Thats pretty much what I want to do but if possible mount the new baffle/ring on the inside of the panel then only cut out the part of the grill I need to. That way itll still look like the grill but w/ the speaker in the middle of it. If that makes sense?

I thought about it a bit more and will have to agree that it prolly wouldnt look too good. Im looking to do something "out of the ordinary" weather it be with glass etc yet have it still look nice.

Here is what I am thinking you want to do. (this is NOT my build)

 

 

 

Mount your MDF ring onto your panel where you want your new speakers at.

Then with some liquid plastic stuff --- Duramix 4040, SEM 4020, or Dominion Seal rigid plastic filler, mold them to the door panel. Make sure you properly prep the panels first.

Then sand it down and get ready to use some filler to get the low spots.

Then you have to choose what finish method you want.

You can use some SEM texture spray and get it to look like the factory panel and paint it, or you can smooth the whole panel out and color match, or cover in vinyl/leather/tweed or even shag (yeahhh baby, yeah!)//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

I would like to do something such as that but I dont have the time with work and all. My plan is to mount the speaker to where it drops into the door panel such as a sub would drop into a box.

well if u dont have the time to do it properly dont do it at all. just make some 6X8 to 6.5 adapters outta 1/2 MDF and put the speakers in the factory location and have it play through the stock door grill
