getting my motorcycle license tomorrow. thoughts on a ride?

thanks for the suggestions guys, let me ask this... is the return of 'investment' usually pretty good on bikes? for instance, if i buy a used 250r like a couple of you guys are recommending, then trade it in for a bigger bike a year later or so, would i be putting out a lot more money or could i upgrade for a grand or two?

with current gas prices you will be better off, but generally anything not american or from europe, doesn't hold value well. that said, buying used in the first place goes a long way.

some local dealers are running adds that would help...buy this year (sportsters or star) ride a year, if you don't like it and want to trade next year, they give you full purchase price as trade in. maybe you can find something like that where you are.

I grew up around dirt bikes as a kid and bought my first street bike when I was 18, a CBR600. The guys are right, that's definitely a lot of bike for your first ride. I probably about killed myself countless times on that thing. I rode that a couple of years then went up to a GSXR750, CBR900, then a Suzuki TL-1000R (loved the sound/power of the v-twin). All were great bikes and had more power than I ever needed. I stopped riding when I had kids, but still get the bug every spring!

Start smaller and work your way up as you're more comfortable. I can't imagine you'll take that big of a hit come trade in time especially if you buy used.

A fast bike is a lot like a loud system...you don't have to use 100% of it. I've been riding for 12+ years and haven't had problems having more bike than I normally use. Friend of mine is 5'7" maybe 125 (female) and her first bike was a Yamaha R1. She had no problems handling it and never had any accidents. If you take one thing from the class -- become a defensive driver. If you feel you can handle a bike go for it..find your style and don't listen to other people. Older bikers can be *****es cause you don't ride their style...and people who don't ride are often just scared of rockets because of the statistics..they unfortunately attract lots of brain dead people who just try to be cool.

this is the problem...80-20 rule

bud buy a Honda F4 doesn't have to be new, it is a good all around bike to start on, its fast, handles pretty good and cruises nice, and it looks good, and it has power yet not enough to get outta hand. I have been riding since I was 5 and I'm 37 I ride street and dirt.

i took the first part of the class today and i go back tomorrow from 8-5 and finish it up then.
my family has a 200cc vespa that ill be taking to school w me in the fall for cheap transportation in addition to my car, but my mom suggested looking into a motorcycle if i enjoy the class enough.

i was thinking about trying to get a ~04 suzuki gsxr 600... what do you guys think? i wouldn't want to spend more than like 4500, do you think thats possible?

i don't know much about bikes but i want something FAST! i'm open to all suggestions
I didn't read this all so if you said your weight I apologize. You need to get a bike that is a good fit for you for one (saying a 250 isn't righ ti fyour 6 foot tall).

Best bike to get (imo) is a suzuki sv650. Decent mid power band and still a fun bike to ride. A 250 is a good bike for a very light person but If you are heavy handed (figure this out right away) even if your light your going to be ramming the throttle then a 250 will get destroyed.

Lots of V-twins (your price range could grab you an older Ducati (I have a 900ss from 02 and 750ss from 01 that I picked up for less than your looking price each))

Don't go with the people that say "get a R1 and just work into it" that is total bullcrap and those people are lucky they didn't die. Get a bike that fits your riding level and ability. Then get another later on.

Try some out for sure to make sure you fit and it isn't too much power.

Good luck!

exactly. Half the people don't know shit. If you want to look cool, get a smallish sports bike. They'll think your good, it'll look cool, and you can eventually go up as you get more comfortable.

Would you rather have a bike that you can handle or be dead.

Your choice really.

sv650's are good... real light and zippy.. good torque //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
X2 if you can find a ducati 750SS you will have an italian bike which gets attention and still keeps you a bit grounded. Mine has the exhaust emptied (getting fixed) so the exhaust is not matching the rest of the system and it will still do 110.

How much do you weigh?

edit: something you hear too much on sites like these is about someone who knows someone who dies. Sad to say it, but that is because it happens often. Last week my co-worker lost his only son. Week and a half before that I lost a fellow Ducati member when a van pulled out in front of him and killed him on impact (search bill culp if you want to read about, very sad)

Just be careful.

I wouldnt say dont get a 600 but def. not any 600 thats newer that 97, it will still be fast as all hell since its your first bike but it wont be todays 600 fast
