Gapped spider subwoofers

Are there any that are affordable? i know the tc/ap have this feature and theres some kenwood woofer IIRC that has a spider on the back of the motor or something, who else uses gapped spiders? By gapped i mean spaced out with air between them as opposed to sandwiched on top one another as in conventional woofers.

Pros for spaced spiders:

Retains linear stroke and high excursion.

Cons:

Reconeing difficulty (top assemblies instead)

requires non standard basket design (minor manufacturing costs)

requires longer coil former (minor manufacturing costs)

Requires multiple spiders (everyone does this anyways)

Seems like the pros tho it be only one by my list is a very heavy weight relative to the cons. cant see why more manufactures dont shoot for gapped spiders. Is it unnecessary? Its proven to be an awesome innovation so that seems unreasonable to say its not necessary.

Bit more power and yes. I like spaced spiders, reduced friction, hopefully a bit better cooling and perhaps less mechanical noise? We'll see.

**** so what 4k daily lol? im probably down for 2 when they come out. Do they still use 8" progressive spiders?

Is there a thread or something i can find more info?

Just to help with your pros and cons list a little bit, here is a pic of a very standard basket with the use of a spider spacer being applied. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

9". And since he just posted, I must give Ciaonzo credit for the idea.

Sweet, I wanna play with one. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

o wow i didnt realize this could be done just adding a spacer like that. dosnt the spider hit the cone at high excursion being so close to the base of the cone?

can this be done for all reconeable subs? I want subs like this they must sound great.

my tc oem 10 has a very similar spacer, havent got to listen to it yet though:(

Not at all, good Sir. I didn't invent the idea, I merely suggested the use of it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

On a standard frame the biggest down-side is the reduced cone angle / distance to the spider.
With a taller frame spaced spiders certainly do have their advantages.
Ok so that addresses my question about the cone hitting the spider. So basically to have a useful spaced spider design it is required for a "custom" basket and longer pole to keep the spiders away from the cone.

This is looking good. I think im going to start designing woofers. all i need to do is figure out the motors and im set lol. I could probably devise some really nice softpart and top assemblies combination's tho.
