Fuse under hood!!

My fuse rating on my Mono amp is 30Ax2..total of 60A and my 4 channel is 40A fuse rating...toal of 100A total for both amps..what size Fuse do i need to have under the hood?? is it a 100A fuse?? i have a 60A fuse in there right now with just the mono amp..when i add the 4 channel do i need to change fuses under the hood??...i man i talked with says to keep the 60A fuse in there under the hood..i think he is wrong..cause you are supposed to run the fuse ratings at or little below..so i need it at 100A or slightly below like 80 or 90A?? hope i am correct..thanks

there's really no reason you HAVE to change that fuse - and if you've only got 8 ga you SHOULDN'T change it. But even if you have 4 ga - I don't think there's any music you can play that's going to push the limits of a 60A fuse, but if you're going to be burping tones for minutes at a time - yeah, you might need that 100A.

i've always said fuse according to current draw, but not to exceed the power wire's max rating.

hmm, Im guessing you mean both?? So assuming my power wire is 2gauge and the total current draw for both amps are 90, what size fuse rating would I use?

90. 2 gauge handles like 250A or somewhere in that neighborhood. 90 should be fine.

yep. fuse 100 or so at the battery. then at the distro, fuse for each amp respectively.

i have a 200A breaker at the hood (4 gauge but will upgrade to 1/0) and then i had a distro with 2 150A fuses (orion 2500d, double power/ground inputs) since i was gonna run ~1400 and 150 was the max for 4 gauge.

Current handling of power wire is based on length - 3ft of 4 gauge could handle 200A, try that at 20ft and you will have a problem. 120A at 17ft causes a loss of 10% which is the most I consider within the norm. However, your amps will not draw full power 100% of the time, but during those peaks you will have a greater loss....Just something to think about.

Rather than start my own thread, what do you think about this fusing/wire setup:

[bATT]--4GA--140Afuse-----------------------------2waydistro

distrooutput1--40A fuse----8GA------[RF2002 Amp (~70wrmsx2)

distrooutput2--100A fuse---8GA-----[RF 1000BD Amp (1000wrmsx1)

Both amps will have low gain settings and do less than their rms daily. Currently I have a 120A Fuse at teh battery. Think that will be enough or should I bump it to 140A to match the amps?

Gain has nothing to do with power output if you have a high volt out HU. Gain is merely input sensitivity. So at Min gain with a 4V HU you will get the same power as a 200mA radio with gain at max. Most radios are now atleast 2V so that point of gain is moot. Sure you can turn it higher, but you lose signal to noise ratio and just get distortion sooner.

Back to your question, stick with the 120A, upgrade if it blows. Purchase a 140 or 150A and keep as a reserve. The chance both amps pulling max power is slim esp if the 200w is running stereo @ 4 ohm
