fuse for the BIG 3 ... ?

My cousin is trying to do his BIG 3, and neither one of us has done it before. So we're rookies. He called me, and I guess we're both confused as to what fuse size we should be using. He's kind of nervous to cause some problems with his battery or alternator. There was something else he wanted me to ask too, but I forgot... So how do we figure out what size fuse we should use?

I don't, it's for ******* who can't tie back their wire properly... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I posted the same Q on caraudioforum.com and got a couple responses telling me that I didn't need ANY fuse at all! Is this true, or just a bunch of riff raff?

"I didn't use any fuses when I did my "big 3" back on my old Accord. I wouldn't suggest using any, because it would be easy for them to blow if you had to jump start your car, where tons of current will be running through the wires for a moment."

"A lot of current will be running between the other car and your battery, or between your battery and the starter, but not between your battery and your alternator, at least not any more than normal. Since you're using 4awg wire then get a fuse somewhere between your alternator's current rating and ~120 amps"

"let me ask you question? is there a fuse in the wire that runs from the alt. to the batt.? NO.so why would you need a fuse to run the big 3? I don`t think so because all you are doing is upgrading your electrical system..I`m not trying to be a smartass just trying to show you don`t make things any harder then they are hope this helps"

I was always told that it depends on what size wire ur using and how many fuses are in the side of the amp. Then i was told to add up the amps of the fuses then get a fuse for the vehicle that matches the number that you came up with when you added the amps of the fuses in the side of the amp together.

^^^ I agree ^^^

You don't need to put a fuse between the alt and the batter when upgrading the big 3. It's just an extra safety measure. If you feel you need to do it for your own peace of mind feel free to. I believe your fuse should match your alt. Dose it make any sense to use 150 amp fuse cuz you are using 4 gauge, when you have a 200 amp alt, etc.

ok, so no fuses at all?Or no fuses between the alt and the batt?im so lost.....
No it's not needed. If you want to spend the extra time and money to do it you can, but it shouldn't be needed as long as you got your wires out of the way of everything and your terminals on good and tight. Fuse between the alt and the battery that is.

noobs... listen... its for safety you a fuse.. if something were to go terribly wrong you would

hate yourself for a long time....

as for the fuse rating... the fuse rating is on the wire, NOT THE AMPS FINAL AMP LOADS...

you get a fuse appropriate for the gauge wire your using. NEVER put a larger fuse than

what a wire is rated for... there rated for a reason.

Finally, something I agree with...

^^^----^^^^ AGREE

The fuse is so that you don't melt your wire by running more amp than it can handle.

Have you herd of those people who melt the headlight wiring b/c they used different bulbs... those bulbs pull more current (amps) than the factory car headlight wires can handle, thus the wire heats up and the protective layer around it melts. This could potentially catch fire... and well i'll let you ponder about what happens when there is a fire under you hood next to a battery

In conclusion, FUSE = NO FIRE HAZZARD
