Full size extended cab owners... lets talk boxes

Hey guys. My daily driver is a 98 Dodge RAM extended cab. Ive decided to upgrade the stereo in it, again.

My question is gonna relate to port/woofer placement and firing direction. All the systems Ive had in this particular truck have been simple sealed enclosures, or small ported ones where firing direction was of little concern to me.

But now Im installing my two xxx15's (05's). Yeah, the back seat is coming out. Im looking at 5 cubes each tuned to 28-32 hz, slot port. Ive been thinking up-firing the subs and ports... its simple and means I wouldn't have to cradle the xxx motors. Down firing would be easy too. Other variations (front-firing sub, up-firing ports for example) would be harder, but doable.

Have you extended cab guys experimented with firing direction? Any insight for me on it?

I will be building a temporary box to experiment with one of the drivers ported (make sure I like the box, the sound, etc). Unfortunately it's odd shape wont really allow me to move it around to experiment much myself, so any input would be appreciated.

Foward is the only way to go..........UpFire is an option, but with them babys I would want to show them off - the difference between up and foward is minimal.

Make sure you get some hot blonde for some hair vid action

Nice Chevelle !

Not too worried about showing them off. Sound comes first, bling second. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif But yes, Ive considered small plexi windows (doing 2 seperate boxes) or inverting them. But Im trying to stay below the window lines, inverted xxx's would be a bit obnoxious. lol

Yeah, small cabin, 100 inches of port tuned low, dual 15's and over 3kwt, I have high hopes for the output potential.

So that's one vote for firing direction wont really matter much. Thanks for the post excelerator. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

edit: the chevelle is a bazillion pieces right now, but thankyou!

in my ram quad cab i did subs firing forward/up at an angle and ports firing straight forward. with a pair of treo ss 15s and a memphis mclass1000d, i did a best of 145.5 outlaw on the termlab. frequency was 52hz, IIRC. that was one insane little setup, lol....

full on frontal.

the boxes were a pain in the ***, never finished them, but they worked for those subs, lol.

LOL yeah I remember that box mrray. Very cool looking. Very.

I think my box is gonna end up considerably bigger than that though, just by guessing from your pics. And much simpler. LOL I cant imagine you cutting those angles and getting them pressure-tight, nice job.

I could do up-firing with ports front-firing pretty easily. But Im thinking Id prefer to keep the subs and ports on the same plane.

Thanks mrray.

when I did my 6 10s ported in my ext cab, I did everything forward.. 2 ports at each end of the box... firing right beside each seat... the woofers were **** close to the back of the seat.... If you can get atleast 6 inches away from the seat with your woofers and port I would go with forward/forward. If not, go up... too close gives some weirdness.

You bring up a good point Kold Killa. If I front-fire the subs, I would have to shorten the depth of the box to accomodate the cone excursion, and thus go taller, above the window line. Up firing, well I dont care if the cones excurt above the window line. lol

Thanks for the input tcguy. Im definitely leaning towards up-up.

I too have a 98 Ram extended cab, but instead of sacrificing my back seat, I plan on raising the seat 3 inches and putting a 12" TC3000 underneath it. I'll have the sub firing forward, and the ports going towards the passenger side doors.

A single 12 just wouldn't be enough for me, or to keep up with my front stage probably. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Im stepping up from two 10's ported now.

Forward and up have box worked in my truck. However, I haven't installed a box yet that could be flipped to find which worked best. The box that I'm building now will be able to flip so that I can try new positions //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I also know that rear firing didn't work well in my truck:(
