they are sq subs. they do not get incredibly loud, not any louder than other entry level subs, but they are engineered better - similar to an IDQ with less expensive cone\coil\former materials.

i had a tempest back in the day (15" version of the shiva) and it was definatly not real loud. but it sounded great.
