Frozen Subwoofer Testing Results

is there any specific reason the spider temp never got down to freezing?
Cooling's a gradual process...if Loyd left the sub in there for six months, I'm sure the spider would stabilize to the ambient air temp.

The material that the spider is made out of is nowhere near as conductive to heat/cold as the motor...so it'll take a longer time to heat up and cool down.

what is a spider made of? some kind of cloth, right?

is it really possible that it would have a greater specific heat that water? (which would undoubtedly freeze in 8 hours, unless there was a very large quantity of it)

Jim nailed it.. just like he nails his hand .. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

for an overnight time frame.. I find it simply impossible for a fabric spider to get cold enough to lose elasticity to the point where it would rip..

if you dribbled water on the spider then froze it that would make a difference. I really cant see the spider cracking though. i can see the ice on the spider cracking but not the spider itself

Even if the specific heat was greater (it probably is) it doesnt matter. How often have you moved a tarp that was covering wood or something outside and the tarp tares when you move it simply because it was so cold. If your spider is going to rip, so are your seats when you sit down. When the temperature is so cold fabric becoems that brittle I doubt you will be surviving for very long anyway.

In fact. I just froze the spider of thoes soft parts I did that test on before and tugged and pulled them in avery way and shape possible. no tare....they didnt even loose much flexebility.

Just tied it with the surround. Same thing. It lost a lot of flexebility but when forced to move as far as it could it didnt brake....and when I jerked it around for a few seconds it warmed up very quicly despite there still be a puddle of liquid difluroethane... with has a boiling point of -23 degrees Celcius.

Just drill a hole in the motor and feed it a steady stream of liquid nitrogen...nothing to it.

I dont forsee that working all too well.

Magnetite is brittle by nature. Wouldnt the extreme temp of the nitrogen break the magnets from the force of driving the speaker? The metal should hold, but I dont see the magnets doing so.

Not only that, but I dont see the glue on the spider holding at that tempature. The motor and basket can transfer heat so even though the temp of the motor is getting fucked with -340*F you would still have a major transfer of that to the basket...which IMO would make the glue brittle and fail.

I just read that CA glue freezes at -20*c which is -4*f IIRC...compare that to the -340*f of the nitrogen, I bet that the glue point of of the basket will be lower then that...I dont see it working //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
