The problem seems to be that even with a stock high amp alternator and optima red top battery the lights still dim horribly on hard notes, to the point where the amp clips as it's not getting enough voltage. What would be the best way to correct this problem? Optima yellow top, Kenetik 2400a, Capacitors, and other smaller Kenetik batteries mounted inline of the amp all come to mind, I just want the simplest and least costly route. Is it true that they say capacitors are only good for a few good hits and then need to recharge? Anyways, here's some pics of the install.

oooo 5.9 limited... sorry couldn't resist

your best bet is get rid of that stock alternator, you're probably looking at 400 bucks for a 240 amp alt. dominick iraggi is supposed to have really nice alternators, thats where i just ordered mine from. seems like a really nice guy.

Thats a killer amp, alot of people dont realize how good those are.....its basically two strapped 1500 watt amps built into one case FTW //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

The stock alternator on 5.9's is already at 150amps, so if im not mistaken the mean green is at 140. How do I get ahold of dominick and what are his prices, he sounds like the way to go.

The Amp seems to be putting out serious power, so much so that I had to have the installer turn it down as it was drawing too much power and clipping badly....I can't wait to hear this thing tuned up full gain volume way up!

The dash work was custom done by a local shop Custom Car Audio here in Jamestown Ny.

thx for the replies

wow looks like his 220 amp for a cherokee only does 100 amps at idle. thats weird, the amputators for the explorers are 240 amp, 165 at idle, and cost less. your stock 150 amp probably does around 70 at idle (guessing)

heres the link if you want to check it out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/220amp-Amputator-Series-Alternator-Dodge-Chrysler_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33573QQihZ019QQitemZ7962719019QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V

you can also email him at dominick@tds.net, he'll probably knock a few bucks off the ebay price.

well... i'll put it like this...

if you're pulling 3000 watts on transients, you'll need 268 amps @ 80 percent efficiency. The stock alt is a bit over its head on this one.

Do you get dimming while driving?

btw... the gain is a level selector, not a volume control... it usually shouldn't be all the way up.

yea the dimming is while driving and stopped....I'll have the charge wire upgraded as the rest is already 0 gauge, have the grounds checked and upgraded, and it looks like I'll be buying a high capacity alternator later this week..

Im still using the stock 90 amp alty in my jeep cherokee, ive been trying to burn it out for months for an excuse to buy a HO alty but it wont die //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Anyways, I ended up putting 4 batteries in my ride....but hey i dont get any dimming now, lol
