friend at work is running 3500 watts to his radio on the stock alternator of his 2007 Chevy cobalt SS, what are the specs etc.. he has no cap and no dimming, we played it full bore this morning with the car running, for 10mins, it was very loud...

no, hes not. period.

the alternator on that car is probably no more than 100A.

100A x 14v = 1400w MAX on tap. that means for the cars ignition system, a/c, fans, headlights, his stereo etc etc.

you do the math...how is a 100A alternator suppose to keep up with a potential 300A current draw (assuming efficiency is 85% or so) with no dimming?

its not gonna happen...ever. our electrical laws wont allow it to happen. if you have no dimming at all, then hes not going past the alternators limits...and on a 100a alt (my guess) that isnt a lot of power considering once he would pull more than 1400w he would start to dim, which he hasn't....

what kind of amp does he have? this id like to know. just a little FYI your friend is an idiot

I do it everday //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

I'd love to see people tell me my Sundown don't put out rated power to.

assuming 3500w music power & appx. 70% eff.

3500/.7 = 5000

Crest factor 30% = 1500w rms

1500/13.8 = 109A

at idle the alt's going to produce - what, 60-80A?

so the battery has to come up with 20-30A at around 12v and also cover the ~100A bursts -- Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

The no dimming comment is a little surprising, but if the battery's in good shape I guess it could happen.

Those numbers assume the amp's running on the brink of clipping playing very high demand, dynamic music - chances are neither are true. 110A would be worst case. 80-100A is probably more likely.

I still run the factory alt in my truck lol but ive got a few extra batts in there that i charge up a few times during the week just to help out.

set up is-

5 nsb 125's

2 SS 6500's

I can do a full 30 second, full tilt bassrace run and not dip below 12v's. At idle, i sit at just above 14

No way he's pushing any real power through the stock 4gauge battery wire going to the trunk and not getting dimming.

GF has a 2006 Cobalt, pushing 1k to the sub & 150 to comps/coax's and she gets noticeable dimming on heavy bass hits. BIG3 will cure that, just haven't gotten around to doing it...

As asked, what amp/amps is he running?

1 amp is a 6 channel JL audio, used for his rear deck, and doors. ( all JL audio)

2nd amp Lanzar (not sure what model, its all black, logo glows red when on, aprox 18" long) also has dial to adjust the bass output, and it' can't handle anything louder then selection 2-3...

his sub is a 10" JL audio, custom built box.

installed at odyssey car audio, barrie ontario.

I have no reason to lie, I was in the car this morning, he has no cap, no extra battery, and no dimming of the headlights or dash..
