it keeps you from using the protected files in ways that the copyright owner doesnt want.for example, the songs i download from rhapsody are protected and you cant burn it to a disc or listen to it on another computer.

so by removing the protection you can do whatever you want with the file, ie: burn it, copy it, etc....
